around the house

High Cross House, an early example of modernist architecture,was built in 1932. It was designed by swiss architect William Lescaze for William Curry who was headmaster, at that time, of the progressive Dartington Hall School.

As with all modernist architecture, the house has large windows, and as a result it feels light and airy. There is a strong sense of the surrounding landscape outside, when one is inside the  house.

Since it was built, the house has been used as accommodation for various members of staff at the Dartington School, and it was home in the nineties to the Dartington archive;

At the time of my residency, High cross was run by the National Trust, with a gallery downstairs, and a cafe, and artists studios upstairs. The artists' residencies ran between three and six months.
